Trusted litigation assistance for New York family lawyers, and thorough, hard-hitting family law and divorce appeals.

Before I was a lawyer, I was a writer. Then I went to law school, and spent a few years practicing in Manhattan. I soon came to a realization: far too much legal writing and research is sloppy and unconvincing. Cases are lost due to subpar legal argumentation and unpersuasive presentation of arguments. My writing background, research skills, and ability to argue facts and law coherently and with authority became a great asset to my family law practice.

I now utilize my unique skillset to represent clients in appeals of family law and divorce court decisions, and assist attorneys directly in producing stellar motions, pleadings, and other litigation documents. I have worked with many of the top family law firms in New York City, and have been named a “Rising Star” by Super Lawyers for five years and counting, an honor afforded to only 1% of national attorneys. Please read on, and click around my site, to learn more about me and how I can help you.

Litigation Assistance

Many New York lawyers could use someone skilled, knowledgeable, and trustworthy to help them research the law and handle the time-consuming tasks of writing and research. Good help is hard to find, and it's especially hard to find when you are busy running a law practice.

I aim to be a lawyer’s go-to "good help" - an attorney, writer, and researcher, who is on call when you need him, and who you can rely on to produce great work.

My skill set is unique: I am a published writer who became the de facto motion practice and research attorney at two law firms. My writings on family law have been featured in several prominent publications, geared toward both lawyers and laypersons. I am a columnist at a local New York City newspaper, and I regularly write on other issues for some of New York’s most famous papers and websites.

Appeals and Appellate Motions

I also directly represent clients who need assistance at the appellate level, either in fixing a mistake made by a trial court or defending against an appeal. I am a practiced and experienced appellate attorney who has successfully briefed appeals and appellate motions in the First and Second Departments. I am well-practiced in the art of oral argument, and I am intimately familiar with the ins and outs of appellate practice. I take pride in presenting arguments that are creative and tailored specifically to the appellate court. I am also affordable, and always work with clients to determine a fee arrangement that is doable for them.

Legal Writing

If you need a motion, opposition, brief, or agreement done right away, or if you think your firm could benefit from having a professional researcher and drafter on hand, let’s talk. Let me show you why the rallying cry at my firms has been, "This is going to end up in motion practice...let's talk to John."

Family Law Appeals

Trial courts sometimes get it wrong. When that happens, it can feel devastating - like the legal system let you down. But the law provides you with another shot. Appeals are often vital for getting justice. For your divorce, custody matter, support issue, and more, I am here to help you fix what the judge got wrong.

“There are two things wrong with almost all legal writing. One is its style. The other is its content.”

— Fred Rodell, Goodbye to Law Reviews, 23 VA. L. REV. 38 (1936)
